Our Critical Thinking & Writing Programs
We intentionally partner with schools and youth-serving organizations whose students have had unequal access to educational opportunities. We bring our programs and our volunteers to the students, at no cost to them, thus removing the barriers of transportation and cost.
All of our programs are designed for our trained and caring volunteers (whom we call coaches) to engage, encourage and collaborate with young writers so that the youth’s voice comes through in an authentic, powerful, and skillful way.
In-School: Students work 1:1 or 1:2 with their coach weekly for 10 weeks on an in-school assignment during class.
Writers Cafe: 7-12th grade students meet weekly with their coach to work on a school assignment or a personal interest project of their own.
College Essay: High school seniors applying to college meet twice a week with their coach to work on their personal essays.
Licensing: We provide materials, training, and support to start your own critical thinking & writing program based on our proven philosophy and methodology.
To date, we have coached more than 38,000 students and recruited and trained more than 4,500 volunteer coaches.

“Lots of people want to help in urban schools, nearly all have good intentions. None made the impact on our English learners like WriterCoach Connection.”
—Kibby Kleiman, Principal, Pinole Valley High School, formerly at Richmond High School
“Student achievement goes up, teachers get much needed relief with the extra individual attention to students, and community members bond with their schools. Everyone wins, and we need more of it.”
